Microsoft announces that it will no longer support SQL Server and that SQL 2014 was an April Fools Joke!

April 1, 2014 by Kenneth Fisher

Microsoft has announced that SQL 2014 was in fact an elaborate April Fool’s joke and that Microsoft intends to move even farther into the cloud. Microsoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella announced this morning

“We felt that by creating such an elaborate prank it would soften the blow. Microsoft will no longer be supporting SQL Server. We will be putting our full efforts into Windows Azure SQL Database. We understand that this will cause some minor hardships for some users of SQL Server but we have been ramping up our support personnel to help with the transition.”

Personally I’m still in a bit of shock. All I can assume is that Microsoft has decided that we weren’t moving into the cloud quite fast enough. I’ve been working with SQL Server for many years now and will now have to transition rather forcefully into the cloud. Fortunately from what I’ve read Azure isn’t all that different from what I’ve known all this time. That and of course SQL 2012 will still be under support for a number of years to come. With any luck over the months and years to come Microsoft will come to it’s senses and reverse this decision. In the mean time I myself will be studying up on MASD and recommend that you do the same.

Can you post the link, Kenneth? That’s always a good rule of thumb BTW 🙂
