Making the mouse pointer easier to see.

I know this is way off my usual content but the other day someone was mentioning how easy it is to lose the mouse pointer. Well a while back I saw a video by Scott Hanselman (blog|twitter). It pointed out that the mouse pointer is way to small by default and when you get a bit older and your eyes maybe aren’t quite as good as they used to be… Well, anyway. The pointer could be bigger. 😁

First off let me apologize for the image quality. It turns out taking a screen shot that includes the mouse pointer is harder than it sounds. But you’ll notice that the image on the left has the default pointer size and color and is rather hard to see. The one on the right it’s just a little bit larger and purple. In my opinion this makes it so much easier to see. The change is easy enough. Unfortunately I only know how to do this on windows, if you are on a Mac or something else you’ll have to figure it out on your own. If you watch the video linked above Scott walks you through making the change. If you’d rather an image see below. To start with I hit the windows button and then mouse pointer size. And that brought up the settings screen below.

I’ve got my pointer changed to size three and that seems about right for me. The big thing for me was the color though. Now personally I like the purple since I don’t see it often so it stands out. That said, you can make it whatever you like best.

Whats really fun is going from my screen on the left, to the default mouse settings of a client VM on the right 😉

OMG! Thank you for posting this! Especially using extended desktop on multiple monitors.

I have two very large screens. Not sure a large pointer would help that much … I use a setting for my Mouse that allows me to tap CTRL and I then get concentric flashing rings around the mouse, so that I can spot where it is 🙂

Just tap-release CTRL to see where the mouse is. Sometimes I have to do that a couple of times if it is miles away from where I thought it was!

Control Panel : Settings : Mouse : Additional mouse options

[Pointer options] : “Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key”

    • That’s a great option and I use it frequently too. I will say that it’s frequently more the color change that makes it easier to see but making it a bit larger adds more color emphasizing the effect.
