SSMS’s Clipboard Manager
13August 19, 2015 by Kenneth Fisher
The other day Richie Rump (b/t) mentioned something called a clipboard manager on twitter. I’ll admit I had to ask what exactly they meant, but once it was described to me I realized it was something I’d wanted off and on for years. Basically it’s a tool that stores multiple copies in an extended clipboard. So you can copy several pieces of text over time and then paste the one you want. Justin Dearing (b/t) and Richie mentioned a Clipboard Manager called Ditto Clipboard Manager. Kendal Van Dyke (b/t) however mentioned one built into SSMS! Now, it only covers what’s currently in the clipboard and what’s been copied in SSMS but since I spend most of my time in SSMS (I even frequently use it as a text editor) that’s just fine. Once you’ve copied several pieces of text you can use Ctrl-Shft-V to cycle through the list in reverse order (last in first out). Want to see how it works? Take a look.
I freaked out when this worked. All my co-workers came running over and I showed them. They thought I was in trouble or something. 🙂
That’s pretty funny. I was pretty impressed when it worked but fortunately I was at home 🙂
Amazing!!! Cool feature. Thanks Kenneth for sharing.
Reblogged this on SQLpathy.
That’s brilliant!!!
It’s not working for me – any particular setting change you need to do? I’m in 2008R2
I’m holding CTRL+C to copy a couple of lines, then holding CTRL+SHIFT+V.
It looks like this is new to SSMS 2012. SSMS 2008 R2 doesn’t have it.
gotcha, thanks
Sweet! Thanks for passing that along!
Nice 🙂
I still prefer clipx (or whole-system alternative) in which you can also get a full menu of clipped items – so you can first choose before pasting.
*nod* That would be nice. There are certainly lots of alternatives. This one just comes nativity with SSMS.
