TSQL Tuesday #85 Invite – Backup and Recovery
39December 6, 2016 by Kenneth Fisher
Come on down! You’re the next contestant on T-SQL Tuesday! I’m your host Kenneth Fisher and this month I’d thought we might talk about security.
No. Wait. Sorry, that was last time. This time I want to hear about backup and recovery.
Backups are one of the most common things DBAs discuss, and they are at once one of the simplest and most complicated parts of our whole job. So let’s hear it for backup and recovery!
Need some suggestions for your post? How about:
- Backups to Azure storage
- Backing up an Azure SQL DB
- Filegroup backups and/or piecemeal restores
- Page restores
- How do you back up an SSAS cube?
- The importance of log backups
- Backup internals
- Recovery strategies
- Any other backup related subjects you can think of (BI, SSRS, Sharepoint, certificates & keys, etc)
And you know what? I’d love it if someone (or a few someones) would do a post on simple, basic backups and/or recovery.
At beginning of the year Tim Ford (b/t) created the Entry Level Content Challenge. Basically saying that entry level information is just as important as advanced content, and I agree 100%. Personally I think this would be a great subject for some #EntryLevel content. It’s certainly important stuff.
What is T-SQL Tuesday
T-SQL Tuesday is a blog party started by Adam Machanic (b/t) just over five years ago. The first Tuesday of each month a blogger hosts the party and suggests a topic. Then anyone who is interested blogs on that topic. It can be a lot of fun and quite a challenge to blog on a topic you didn’t pick. Not to mention the time limit. I didn’t mention the time limit? Oh, well, you have one week to write your blog and then it has to be posted on the second Tuesday of the month.
How to join the party
- Your post must be published on Tuesday December 13, 2016. Don’t be late!
- Your post must contain the T-SQL Tuesday logo at the top (see above) and the image must link back to this blog post. Otherwise, how will we know it’s a T-SQL Tuesday post?
- Trackbacks should work, but if not please put a link to your post in the comments section so everyone can see your contribution!
How do I host?
If you want to host just contact Adam and ask for a spot. I believe there is a requirement that you have to have participated in T-SQL Tuesday at least a few times, but hey that’s only reasonable right?
Hi Kenneth,
T-SQL Tuesday logo is missing. Just in case you missed it.
Best regards,
Marek
Added. *sigh* Lots of problems with this post. Sorry about that.
ok if I do a video and embed that? Been wanting to test some software a friend recommended 🙂
Shouldn’t be a problem as long as it follows the rules. The TSQL2sday image, a link back to this post and a comment here. And of course it has to be posted next Tuesday 🙂

Hi Kenneth,
My entry for this month – http://stuart-moore.com/easier-sql-server-restores-dbatools/
Another one on the importance of actually trying to restore your backups, but this time introducing some new features in DBATools that make it much easier.
Cheers
Stuart
